Fun with Balloons & Terminology

Supplies needed:

  • Balloons - one color for each team, one balloon per team member
  • Balloons should be blown up beforehand as large as possible.
  • Specific terminology for the belt colors in class.

Divide class into two teams (if class size is 20 or under). Larger classes should be divided into more teams. Teams should have an equal number of members.

Line the teams up - one on one side of the dojang, the other on the other side of the dojang - in a straight line so all members are facing a member of the opposite team on the other side of the dojang. (Kind of like they would be doing one steps only very far apart). All the balloons for their team are in a pile behind them. Give them team names to match the balloon color (blue, red, purple, etc.)

Yell a technique at the blue team - using Korean terminology. You should have people watching them to be sure they do the technique correctly and quickly without looking at those around them. If any member of the team has to look at the members around them to know what to do or think too hard on what you said, that member is out for now. If they do the technique quickly and correctly, they stay in the game.

Now yell a different technique at the red team - using Korean terminology. Use the same criteria above.

Each team has five techniques which must be performed (front kick, low block, spinning back kick, jump front kick, etc.). Any member which makes it through all five techniques may then go to the opposite team's balloons and take one. They then have five tries with their foot only to break the balloon - without using their hands. (Place it on the floor in front of them and stomp it). Sometimes the balloons break, sometimes they don't.

Whichever team has the most balloons left after the game is over is the winner.
