Okay, how many of you have ever played TV tag? My
guess? Most of you. I don’t think there’s one person
who hasn’t at least heard of TV tag. Well,
that’s exactly what this game is, except with a
Tang Soo Do twist.
How to play:
First, you’ll need a group of at least 3 or 4 people
– anything less and it won’t really be much fun. It
works much better with a very large group.
Secondly, you’ll need to decide who’s it.
Now you’re ready. Play this game like regular tag.
Whoever is IT runs around and tries to make other
people IT by tagging them. The difference between
this game and regular tag is that instead of having
a set base, you can be on base anywhere. BUT to be
on base, you have to drop down to the ground and
call out a karate move – in Korean. To make it
harder, at the beginning of the game pick a certain
kind of terminology – only kicks, only punches, only
blocks, etc.
If you’re IT and a person drops down, you are NOT
allowed to stand there and guard them. But, a person
that is on base is not allowed to stay on base for
more than 15-20 seconds. If they remain on base
under the same Korean terminology for more than 20
seconds (and get caught) they are automatically it.
If you want to make it a bit harder, so you actually
have to think, designate that you are not allowed to
repeat a term. Because then when all the easy ones
are taken, it’s harder to think of the longer, more
complex moves and no one stays IT for very long.
Alternate Version: If you want to learn while
playing, you can add this little twist. If a person
drops down and says a move in Korean, if whoever is
IT can name that move right after it’s said, it
automatically pulls the person off base and leaves
them open to be tagged.
This is a great way to learn and have fun, because
if someone says a move you don’t know, you can
question them as to what it is and then you just
learned a new phrase. Have fun!
